Dedicated to the sacred mountain of Buddhism, Koyasan, this artwork symbolizes the enduring combination of Shintoism and Buddhism in the region. Over 1,200 years ago, before the mountain was reclaimed for Buddhist practices, the area was under the ownership and governance of the Shinto deity Niutsuhime-no-Okami. To emphasize the historical relationship between these two religions in Japan, the piece draws inspiration from both Dainichi-Nyorai Buddha and a beautiful rose pattern originating from the ceremonial dress heritage of the Niutsuhime Shrine dating back to the 15th century. The entire piece, including the rose pattern, is meticulously hand-crafted with gold leaf.
真言宗の聖地として名高い高野山は、空海がこの地を開く前、神道の女神である丹生都比売大神（にうつひめのおおかみ）の神領でした。空海はこの女神から社領の一部を譲り受けたことに感謝し、丹生都比売大神を高野山の守り神として祀りました。この作品には、高野山が1200年にわたり仏と神が共存する神仏習合を守り続けた物語が表現されています。丹生都比売神社に伝わる装束の刺繍を模写した美しいバラの模様と、それが取り囲む大日如来をあらわした太陽からなるこの作品は、金沢の金箔を用いて細やかな手作業で制作されました。
